Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

ABOUT IMAGES

Q: Why are my images of documents and maps too small to read?

A: Almost all of our images are enlarged and enhanced for easy reading. If the image isn't large enough, this is usually because of settings in your web browser - there are some web browsers that automatically "force" every image to "fit into your monitor screen size". Instead, set your browser to show the whole image. Sometimes your browser may momentarily show a small red or orange image if you move your cursor around in the bottom right corner area of an image. If you click on that small red image the picture usually will blow up to full size for easy viewing.

Q: When I see an image for my ancestor on my computer monitor, can I save it to my computer hard disk or a CD?

A: Yes, of course, and it is free to do so! Right-click on your mouse, and select "Save Image as". Then a window opens letting you decide where to store the image on your computer - once you make that selection you can also rename the image (if you wish) and then click on "SAVE" - the image will download into your computer.

ABOUT FINDING ANCESTORS

Q: I am having difficulty in finding my ancestors. What more can I do?

A: (1) Make sure you have really read the section "Tips for Searching" (see the top right side of the Ancestor Search screen).

(2) Be sure you are also clicking not only on the ancestors name, but also on the little image that often appears at the end of the sentence about your ancestor.

(3) Be sure to see the section of our website (Information desk) that shows you how to search on other websites in 200 countries around the world. Under Canada, for example, we have about 100 other Canadian websites where you might find information about your ancestors. Remember, no one website has "everything" !

(4) If you have a real problem, email us at grl@grl.com and we will try to answer your questions. Be sure to outline what you DO know about your ancestor, the marriage partner, and the children - such things as years and places are very important.
